Blackdrop Island

$45.00

Fresh 'photographic-produce' from Sweden (pronouced Sveeeden by some) in our section of rare & curated art books !

Blackdrop Island

“In Klara Källströms’ Blackdrop Island, she plays with the idiom 'to dig where you stand'. What happens if you do that? You come to the other side of the planet.”

Sinziana Ravini, Microfictions, 2009

The photographs were taken during a stay in Tokyo in 2008 and a revisit in 2010. Documenting things at night, when darkness creates black backdrops and only allows us see a bit of the scenery, is something that occupies Klaras’ interest. It becomes “partially a fictional documentation”, she says. Viktor Johansson has written a poetic suite accompanying the images and the result is shown in the book as two parallel worlds, encapsulated in double-folded sheets. Blackdrop Island was released at the opening of Klara Källströms’ solo show with the same title at Fotografiska, the Swedish Museum of Photography, in September 2011...And now its here in the United States at Skylight Books.

This is not one to miss...

Fragile Gang - Twister in the Ocean

$9.99
Twister in the Ocean

For years El Paso, Texas band Fragile Gang (including Skylight Staffer Arlo Klahr) have weaved the twin strands of cracked-up bedroom punk and sweet silvery folk.

On their new album, Twister in the Ocrean, they've gone a step further, drawing on the spirit of the folk music they love: sweet soul, sugar pop, Carter Family folk, and DIY underground sounds of all stripes.  In the process, they've made a record that manages to feel like both a mature culmination and an assured first step.
